On the front page of DesignedLocally.com, I outline the bigger mission of the platform. There is deeper aspirations for the platform. That is to –
- Showcase the possibilities of 3D printing in everyday life, not just in Engineering Journals or University Publications. In real-life. In reflection, I think it feels too far out there for many to care or see its benefits.
- Empower designers from all backgrounds to share their craft with their communities. If you can deliverable on the requested designs, does it matter that you have a B.S. in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited university? Come on now…
- Remove some of the dependency companies and manufacturers impose on “consumers.” They depend on your purchasing from them and replacing products whenever their planned obsolescence comes to fruition (yes, this is a thing engineers/companies do). By sourcing your designs locally, we are removing a dependency from big corporations. We are also reducing waste. We are retaining buyer power. A big middle finger to many corporations who see you as a dollar amount.
Here is the purpose outlined on the homepage.
When you design locally, you’re not just receiving custom, you’re
bringing ideas to life; making physical what was once invisible
empowering creators
giving power to people instead of big corporations & manufacturers
showing the world what’s possible when the crowd [co-]creates
bridging gaps between communities, cultures, skill-levels
funding future projects that matter – efforts for co-creation with all people, for all people.
You are making technical creation more accessible and approachable for all.
And by Joining Designed Locally, you’re
committing to a movement
a community
with a long-view
supporting local designers and entrepreneurs
to create courageously
if you want cheap, get it online
if you want human, have it designed locally.
This tool is not perfect by any means. There is so much work to be done. Our pay structure is not established yet, it may seem too much or absolutely absurd. But beyond those things, DesignedLocally.com will be a community of co-conspirators for creation. Not all will understand, but for now, we’re looking for the early believers of this future.
